Monday, December 10, 2012 EVANSVILLE COURIER PRESS Christopher L. Effinger Newburgh, Ind. Local Christopher L. Effinger, 54, of Newburgh, Indiana, passed away Saturday, December 8, 2012, at St. Vincent St.

Vincent Seton Hospital in Indianapolis, Ind. Chris was born in Evansville, Indiana, on September 13, 1958, to Merrill J. Effinger and Sara Lee (Pence) Effinger. He taught history class at Vincennes Lincoln High School for 15 years. Chris was a member of St.

John Baptist Catholic Church, an Eagle Scout and Scout Executive for the Boy! Scouts of America. Chris was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, where he was a former Grand Knight, 3rd and 4th Degree member, and a Faithful Navigator for two years. Chris is survived by daughter, Katie Effinger, of Lafayette, son, Alex Effinger, a student at LSU; father, Merrill J. Effinger, of Newburgh, brothers, Jim Effinger, of Newburgh, Tom Effinger (Clare), of Chapin, S.C., and Mike Effinger (Holly), of St. Louis, sister, Ellen Clements, of Morganfield, and several nieces and nephews.

Chris was preceded in death by his mother. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at St. John Baptist Catholic Church, 625 Frame Road, Newburgh, IN 47630, with Father Attila Frohlich officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery.

Ava Hughes, 81, of Evansville, passed away Wednesday, December 5, 2012, at the Columbia Health Care Center. Ava was loved by all who helped care for her through the years and will be missed. She is survived by two sisters, Rita Thompkins and Frances Chandler; and several nieces and nephews. Russell I E. Kemp, 89, of Evansville, passed away Saturday, December 8, 2012, at VNA Hospice. He was born January 17, 1923, in Dierks, Arkansas. Russell was a graduate of SMU at the top of his class. He was a U.S.

Army veteran serving in World War II. Russell had been an electrical engineer at General Electric for 39 years. He was a member of Fairlawn United Methodist Church. Russell enjoyed horse racing, traveling, auto mechanics and golf. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Rebecca Kemp, on October 16, 2012.

Russell is survived by his sons, Michael E. Kemp (Lynn of Corydon, and John J. Kemp (Janna of Carrollton, Texas; and granddaughter, Angela K. Kemp. Services will be 2 p.m.

Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at Alexander East Chapel, officiated by Rev. Pat Jackson, with entombment in Park Lawn Cemetery. She was born on December 19, 1933, to Charles and Lena Smith. Beatrice married George Arthur Land and together they enjoyed 33 years of marriage before his death in 1987. Beatrice retired from Welborn Baptist Hospital in 1997. She held several offices, including Board President for St. Mary's Auxiliary.

There she proudly gave 11,500 hours of her time, volunteering for 15 years. Beatrice was also very active in her church, Northeast Park Baptist. The greatest joy in her life was spending time with her children and grandchildren. Beatrice was preceded in death by her loving husband, George A. Land by her parents, Charles and Lena Smith; and by her twin sister, Beverly Jane.

Survivors include her children, George Land, of California, Nancy (James) Fyffe, of Evansville, Diane (Bill) Edwards, of Evansville, Judy (Stephen) Wissel, of Mt. Carmel, and Katie Jo (Dan) Lappe, of Evansville; her grandchildren, Shannon White, Sean Land, Holly (Andrew) Titus, Matthew Edwards, Heather (Nathan) Brandle, Addison Wissel, Evan Wissel, Daniel (Mandy) Lappe and Bethany Lappe; and great-grandson, Hunter Brandle. Mildred 'Millie" Burnes Log a Zelenko, 63, of Evansville, passed away Friday, December 7, 2012, at the St. Vincent Heart Center in Indianapolis. She went peacefully, looking into her husband's eyes, while being held by him with her family by her side. Millie was a 1967 graduate of Rex Mundi High School. She had worked for Utterback Jewelers, the office of Dr.

Rodney Brown, and until her illness she was an employee of Sterling United Federal Credit Union. Millie had been one of the charter members of Crescent City Civitan. She served on numerous committees, including that of club president. She has numerous certificates for her volunteer work with the American Cancer Society. Powers Boonville, Ind. William H. Powers, 70, passed away Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at his home with his family around him. William was born at Deaconess Hospital to Myrtle and Howard Powers who preceded him in death.

He spent most of his working career at Deaconess Hospital and died in the care of Hospice. Bill was an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting. He was active in community affairs including United Way. He loved his church and its people.

His family was his first priority and he especially loved texting with his grandchildren. Bill is survived by his wife of 49 years, Rose; two daughters, Ann Engstrom and Sarah Gullion, both of Cincinnati, Ohio; son, Steven Powers, of Folsomville; five grandchildren, Jessica, Casey, Aaron, Wesley and Molly; and a sister, Barbara M.
